Monaco's Tenure at Williamsville South Over

Head Varsity Basketball, and Golf Coach Al Monaco of Williamsville South High School was notified Friday evening he would be relieved of his coaching duties.

According to the Buffalo News, Monaco was let go do to parents/players complaining about playing time, and questioning the type of game style used by Monaco. Some students also filed harassment complaints to Amherst police.

Many people such as Dave Archer, the executive director of the Basketball Coaches Association of Western New York were aroused by this news. Archer wrote to the Board of Education at Williamsville School District, I am completely shocked by the recent decision of Dr. Scott Martzloff, Superintendent of Schools for the Williamsville Central School District to remove Al Monaco as boy’s basketball coach at Williamsville South High School. A huge mistake has been made! This is completely unjust action!”

Monaco had been coaching for 24 years. He led the 2010-2011 basketball team to an astonishing 20-2 record. The Billies were also ranked 63rd in the state, and 5th in their section. Coach Monaco and the Billies followed up that tremendous season with a 14-6 record in 2011-2012, along with sharing the ECIC II league title last year with long time rival, Williamsville East.

The public who is supporting Monaco is expected to meet tonight at Williamsville School Board meeting to show support for the former coach. Both Monaco and Williamsville South athletic director refused to comment on the situation.  It is also unclear who or when a new coach will be named.

Source: Akeel Lynch Considering Iowa

Amid all the scandals and unwanted publicity surrounding Penn State and it's football program, it is tough to blame any football player for wanting out.

Players and current recruits are allowed to transfer and/or change their commitment without penalty due to the recent NCAA sanctions.  Current running back Silas Redd is visiting USC and is expected to make his decision early next week.

Former St. Francis running back Akeel Lynch withdrew his commitment to Boston College to switch to his dream school Penn State a few months back.  Today, sources have said that Lynch is strongly considering withdrawing his commitment once again and joining the Iowa Hawkeys.

Lynch, who was so spectacular in his senior season in Western New York, fr now is still committed to Penn State but it will be interesting to see who he ultimately is running the football for come September.

Blackwell Turns down Alabama Offer: Ball St. Bound

It was just over a month ago when recent Saint Joe's graduate James Blackwell finished second in the International Junior Masters at East Aurora Country Club.  During his tremendous week of play, he was contacted by the University of Alabama coaching staff about the possibility of joining the number one golf program in the nation.

James lost the championship match 2&1 to Joey Savoie of Canada and had a tough decision to make.  He had Ball State in one hand, and Alabama in the other.  I spoke with James not too long after the Masters and he didn't know what he was going to do.

A few weeks later, two days before the Porter Cup, he did have his mind made up.  James told me that he was going to honor his commitment to Ball State and turn down Alabama.  In a Buffalo News quote, James expressed his loyalty and how growing up around Delaware Park, it was so important to be a man of your word.

James will take his talent and phenomenal ball striking to join a Cardinals squad looking to jump back into the top 25 this season.

Werenski Holds on for Porter Cup Victory

Richy Werenski didn't shoot a round higher than 68 this week in the Porter Cup which lead to him capturing the 54th Porter Cup trophy.

Werenski made only one bogey through 72 holes this weekend, and that coming at the par-4 14th hole in the final round with a three shot lead.  He was virtually flawless through 4 rounds en route to a two shot victory over Denny McCarthy from Rockville, MD.

The Georgia Tech junior made 16 birdies and an eagle in four rounds.  He came into the Porter Cup ranked 120 in the latest GW College Rankings and 70th in the Scratch Players Amateur Rankings.

2011 champion Patrick Rodgers finished in third place after finishing at 13 under par.  He also did not post a round over par as 69 was his highest score.

Of the local players in this year's field, Clearance's Matt Stasiak posted the highest finish.  Stasiak (+11) shot a 3 under 67 in the second round but couldn't find much after that as he followed with rounds of 73 and 77.

Chris Covelli, playing in his third Porter Cup was one shot behind Stasiak as he posted rounds of 74,73,72,73 to total +12.  Lewiston's Mike Boss couldn't follow up his second round 66 which consisted of five straight birdies on the back as he shot 79 and 76 the final two days to finish at 14 over par.

James Blackwell, the youngest player in this Porter Cup opened with a 75 and couldn't get the putter going all week.  Blackwell struck the ball beautifully for four days but never had a chance to score as well as he could with the lack of consistency on the greens.  He finished at +26, posting a final round 72 on Saturday.  Rounding out the local players was Brian Jurkiewicz of Hamburg.  He too opened with 75 but struggled to get into his usual groove throughout the week.  His rounds of 75,79,80,77 put him at +31.

Werenski on Cruise at Porter Cup

Richy Werenski's second round 62 was not only the lowest round of the tournament, but it also has put him in a position to capture his first Porter Cup title this afternoon.

Opening with a 66, Werenski has only bettered his total score each day.  A third round 67 has given him a four shot lead heading into today's final round.  He is being chased by Justin Thomas (-11) of Kentucky and a group of players at 10 and 9 under par including defending champion Patrick Rodgers.

The final group goes off at 12:40 this afternoon while the local players are already on the course.  It has not been the best of weeks for the five local players in the field.  Scores are below for all the local players.  Check back tonight for a full recap and review of the 54th Porter Cup.

Matt Stasiak (Clearance, NY) 74,67,73 (+4)
Michael Boss (Lewiston, NY) 73,66,79 (+8)
Chris Covelli (Buffalo, NY) 74,73,72 (+9)
James Blackwell (North Tonawanda, NY) 75,77,82 (+24)
Brian Jurkiewicz (Hamburg, NY) 75,79,80 (+24)

McCarthy Takes Early Lead at Porter Cup

The 54th playing of the Porter Cup kicked off today at Niagara Falls Country Club.  This year's field featured some of the top amateurs in the world including defending Patrick Rodgers of Stanford.

On a hot and muggy day, there were 37 players under par.  Denny McCarthy (Univ. of Virginia) posted the best score of the day of 64 (-6).  After a bogey at the opening hole, his scorecard was clean with seven birdies.  Mike McCoy, playing in his 13th Porter Cup from WesDesmoines, Iowa shot an opening round 66 (-4).  Rodgers started off his title defense with a three under par 67.

There are five local players competing in this year's Porter Cup.  Chris Covelli, from Buffalo opened with a 74.  Covelli, coming off his T6 finish at the Erie County Open, is playing in his third Porter Cup.  Mike Boss, son of Niagara Falls CC head golf professional John Boss fired a 73 to start his second Porter Cup.  Matt Stasiak, recently graduated from Miami (Oh.) opened with the same score as Covelli, 74.  There are also two locals making their Porter Cup debuts.  Brian Jurkiewicz of Hamburg, NY qualified for this tournament a few weeks ago by shooting an even par 70 and winning a five man playoff.  He opened with a 75 today.  After struggling to a 40 on the front side, he came back with three birdies on holes 11, 13, and 15 before bogeying his final three.  James Blackwell of North Tonawanda, recent International Junior Matsers medalist and runner up also shot 75.  He too opened with a 40 on the front before making two birdies on the back along with a double bogey to shoot a 75.

A complete leaderboard and list of second round tee times can be found on www.portercup.com.  Check back tomorrow for more updates and a second round recap as Downtown Sports will be in Niagara Falls all day to cover the tournament.  You can follow @J_Snyder613 on twitter as I will be live tweeting scores and updates all round.

Baron Excited for Challenge at Canisius

The Canisius College Golden Griffins have a new men's basketball coach. Jim Baron was introduced Tuesday afternoon inside the Koessler Athletic Center in front of many students, faculty, alumni, fans, and media.

Baron thanked the Griffs for giving him another chance to coach. He has coached at St. Bonaventure, St. Francis, and most recently Rhode Island to go along with many stints as an assistant. Baron is a proven winner and has shown that everywhere he goes. Canisius will be looking for him to make their struggling program into a winner as well.

"I'm looking forward to reconnecting with the great high school coaches that are in the area," said Baron. "I think the MAAC conference is a solid conference, with great balance and has excellent programs with terrific coaches... When I come into programs, those young men become our young men. I'm really looking forward to the challenges, but also to the support, and the individuals."

Towards the end of his conference, Baron showed his familiarity with the area by noting that he is excited to get chicken wings from the anchor bar and to eat at Chef's.

Forward Chris Manhertz, heading into his junior year told me that Baron "just gave us an overview of his coaching style and what he expects of us as student-athletes."

Losing head coach Tom Parrotta was a blow to most players on the team as they had developed relationships with him over his six year stint at Canisius. Manhertz said, "it was unfortunate at the time... but we can't worry about what we can't control."

The team itself will have to recover from a very disappointing 5-25 (1-17) finish last year. "I think we were somewhat sub-par defensively in my opinion and that's one thing we need to tighten up this year," said Manhertz. He told me that he is working on becoming a more complete player. Manhertz averaged 7.9 rebounds per game last year. He also had 99 offensive boards. "I'm just trying to be as versatile as possible. I'm just working on my ball handling and perimeter skills, and jump shot."

The buzz around the team last year was the three transfer students waiting in the wings having to sit out the entire season due to NCAA transfer rules. 6 foot 10 inch forwards Freddy Asprilla from Kansas State and Jordan Heath from NAIA II Roberts Wesleyan are going to add a major force down low for the Griffs. "With Freddy, Jordan, and Issac coming in we are going to have a very complete team," junior guard Gabby Belardo told me. "They are going to have a big impact."

Belardo of course was a preseason first team all MAAC last season after transferring from South Florida but didn't have the season he would have liked. He was nagged all season by a back injury which forced him to miss some time and play hurt for most of the season. I asked Belardo about his back and he told me "it feels a lot better. I have been doing my workouts good, its a work in progress."

This hire is something that will hopefully provide a spark for the program that it hasn't seen since the 1996, the last time the Griffs were atop the MAAC. Baron will have a tough task in front of him but re-building a basketball program doesn't happen overnight.

Griffs to Introduce Baron at 3:00pm Today

After the long search, the Canisius College men's basketball program has found their next head coach to replace Tom Parrotta.

"I am extremely pleased to introduce Jim Baron as our men's basketball coach," athletic director Bill Maher said. "In naming Jim to his position, we have hired a man who has a proven track record of building successful basketball programs and developing young men. He is excited to return to Western New York to lead the Canisius College basketball program."

Jim Baron, a Saint Bonaventure graduate and player himself will take over as the 23rd coach in the school's history and try to rebuild an already broken down program.

Baron was an assistant coach at Notre Dame (1981-87), St. Bonaventure (1980-81), Loyola University (Md.) (1979-80), and the University of Rochester (1978-79).

His first head coaching job was at Saint Francis University (PA) where he led the program to it's only NCAA Tournament berth in 1991. Baron also spent time coaching in the Atlantic-10 with his alma mater St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island.

Jim Baron has won 390 games in his career to go along with eight 20 win seasons, 2 NCAA Tournament berths, and 11 postseason appearances.

Canisius will introduce Baron today in a 3:00pm press conference at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Nicholson Carries Bonnies into NCAA Tournament

It took 26 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 blocks from the A-10 player of the year but Andrew Nicholson and the rest of his Saint Bonaventure Bonnies are heading to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000.

12 years ago, the Bonaventure basketball program was embarrassed after they were found using an illegal player and then allowing the remaining players to boycott the remainder of the season.

Head coach Mark Schmidt talked all week about rebuilding the program the right way. The school's first Atlantic 10 championship is a great way to show that they have done that.

Da'Quan Cook and Charlon Kloof added nine points a piece to go along with Nicholson's magnificent performance Sunday afternoon in Atlantic City.

"He's a poor man's Tim Duncan" said Xavier head coach Chris Mack after the game. Nicholson was spectacular on both ends of the floor for the Bonnies. He hit shots in the post area as well as beyond the arch. His 8 blocks were the most telling stat as he consistently kept Xavier's forwards ineffective for the majority of the game.

St. Bonaventure opened up a double digit lead multiple times in the first half before taking a 13 point lead into the break.

During the halftime coverage on CBS, analyst Charles Barkley said that the Bonnies should have been up by even more. "They clearly outplayed the Musketeers in the first half."

Xavier hung tough in the second half after the Bonnies hot shooting went south. They were able to close the gap to as few as four but Nicholson and the rest of the players made big shots when they were needed.

Saint Bonaventure will await their seeding and opponent tonight at 7:00 pm EST when the brackets are released.

Regardless of the outcome in the tournament, the Bonnies have brought a spark back to "big four" basketball and athletics here in the Western New York Area.

Third Time, Not the Charm for UB

A valiant effort from the UB Bulls Friday night at Quicken Loans Arena fell short as they lost to the Bobcats of Ohio for the third time in as many efforts this season.

This loss was the most painful of the season as the Bulls saw their chance at obtaining a bid to the NCAA tournament disappear.

A career night from the conference player of the year Mitchell Watt still wasn't enough to push the Bulls past the Bobcats. He ended with 32 points (career high) and 11 rebounds.

The Bulls had multiple looks at the end of the game. With 0:15 remaining, Watt missed on a long three but the rebound was corralled in by Zach Flizen. He then missed on a three of his own. After an Ohio miss at the free throw line, Jarod Oldham's half court heave, right on line, clanked off the back iron.

The Bulls entered the conference tournament with an overall record of 19-9 and 12-4 in conference. They clinched the number two seed by defeating Bowling Green in the regular season finale.

Ohio shot 12-25 from three point range in the game and that was the difference. Point guard D.J. Cooper hit 5 threes in the first half and ended with 18 points.

The Bulls were able to erase large deficits multiple times in the game but Ohio's 15 point lead in the second half was just too much to overcome.

Buffalo ends the year at 19-10 and will await to see if a bid to any other postseason tournaments awaits them.

Bonnies Headed to A-10 Final

After being up by as many as 16 in the second half, the St. Bonaventure Bonnies staved off a furious University of Massachusetts comeback to reach it's first Atlantic 10 final since 2000.

The Bonnies lead by by seven, 48-41 at the break and were guided by junior guard Demitrius Conger who finished the game with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists.

Conference player of the year Andrew Nicholson hit a three point shot with 7:33 left in the second half to give his Bonnies a 70-54 lead. After a UMass timeout, they slowly started to chip away at the lead and trailed by just one, 81-80 with 0:16 left.

After Charlon Kloof made one of two shots at the free throw line for Bonaventure, Raphiael Putney missed a deep three for Massachusetts and the rebound was secured by freshman Mathew Wright for the Bonnies who went on to ice the game with two free throws.

Conger said of his performance, "I felt like going with the flow of the game, you know, teammates was open, you know, they had open shots I passed the ball to them. I was open, they passed the ball to me. It was the flow of the game. Just so happened I scored 22 points."

Nicholson, who only played 25 minutes due to foul trouble had 19 points to go along with 6 rebounds.

When asked after the game what he thought of his team having the opportunity to go to the NCAA tournament, head coach Mark Schmidt said "It would be a great accomplishment for our team. You know, I said it yesterday, we said we were going to rebuild this program and we were going to rebuild it the right way, bringing in good guys, kids that are going to class, graduate, keep their nose clean socially, and we've done it."

Massachusetts was lead by Terrell Vinson who had 20 points. Freshman Maxie Esho came off the bench for Minutemen and contributed 16 points and 8 rebounds.

Saint Bonaventure, the tournament's fourth seed, moves on to face the winner of the other semifinal game currently in progress between (2) St. Louis and (3) Xavier. The final will take place tomorrow at 1:00 pm EST on CBS Sports.

Nicholson Wins A-10 POY

Saint Bonaventure senior forward Andrew Nicholson has been named the Atlantic-10 men's basketball player of the year.

Nicholson led the league in scoring with 17.9 points per game and was second in rebounds per game at 8.3. He has scored 25 points in four of his past five games and has eclipsed 30 points, four times this season.

Nicholson started off his career at Bonaventure making the all-freshman team. He followed that up the next year being named to the A-10 second team. The past two seasons, Nicholson has been selected to the all conference first team and this year, he can add player of the year to his accomplishments.

The Bonnies sit in fourth place in the A-10 heading into the conference tournament with an overall record of 17-11 and 10-6 in conference. They will receive an automatic bye into the second round. They will face the winner of Saint Joesph's and Charlotte.

Nicholson has been regarded as professional prospect for some years now and ESPN currently has Nicholson as a late first round pick in June's draft.

Daemen Men & Women Heading West

Both the men's and women's basketball teams at Daemen College are heading to the National Tournament.

The men's team did it the easier way, winning the AMC conference last Saturday over Wilberforce. The women lost their conference final game at Point Park but were able to get an at large bid to make it two consecutive years in the tournament.

The brackets were announced last night as the men's tournament is in Point Lockout, Missouri and the girls in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The Wildcats finished the year with an overall record of 20-10 (10-2) and shared the regular season conference title with Walsh who was ineligible for post-season play. The Lady Wildcats finished 23-7 (12-2). As noted, they fell to Point Park in the conference finals but they too won a share of the regular season title. The Dave Skolen coached team had a strong season racking up yet another 20 win season which pushed them over top and into the field of 32.

The men were led by senior Dom Mazzochi who averaged 15.2 ppg and 5.8 rpg. Not far behind him was junior forward Jim Regan who averaged 12.8 ppg and an impressive 15.3 ppg in conference games. Junior guards Casey Sheehan and Mark Coppola were catalysts for the Wildcats as both were able to open up holes in defenses and create for their teammates. Coppola led the team in assists with over five per game. Freshman Gerald Beverly has a bright future ahead of him as he was key off the bench for the Wildcats. His size and strength will be a force for the next few years. Junior guard Devon Dawson, one year removed from an Achilles injury which sidelines him for the entirety of the 2010-2011 campaign came back strong and was a key contributor on coach Don Silveri's lethal bench.

Ellie Allen and Chelsea Andorka were big performers and stepped up in many key spots throughout the year for the Lady Wildcats. They averaged 14 and 12 points respectively. Both were named AMC player of the week numerous times. Alongside Allen and Andorka were key starters such as Courtney Donovan and Samantha Stanfield. Donovan, who showed she can play inside as well as step out and shoot from range had a great senior season. Stanfield, in her first year as a starter was a clutch shooter for the team all throughout the season.

The men will play their opening round game Thursday March 8th at 8:30 am CST against Bellevue (Neb.) who is ranked seventh in the latest coaches top 25 poll.

The women, a seven seed in the tournament will play the second seeded Morningside (Iowa) (25-8) at 7:30 pm CST on Wednesday

Niagara Falls' Flynn a Wanted Man

Houston Rockets point guard and former Niagara Falls high school standout Johnny Flynn is rumored to be wanted by both the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers.

Flynn who played his college basketball at Syracuse played alongside Paul Harris here in Niagara Falls. Flynn went on to be the sixth overall player taken in the 2009 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, was traded to Houston last summer.

In his rookie year, he averaged 13.4 points, 4.4 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game.

Since then, Flynn has seen his production as well as his minutes fall. He has only appeared in 7 games this year, averaging 3.1 points and 2.4 assists per game.

A fresh start in New York or Los Angeles is something that Flynn may need in order for his talents to be used to their best.

USA Struggling in World Juniors

The United States is struggling in the 2012 World Junior U-21 Tournament held in Alberta, Canada.

The Americans got off to a strong start with an 11-3 win over the Danes, but in their latest game the United States were unable to finish scoring chances and lost to Finland 4-1.

The game got off to a slow start with no scoring in the first period. Finland broke through US backup goalie John Gibson in the 2nd. American coach Dean Blias decided to rest the starting and WJC veteran goalie Jack Campbell in the 2nd game of the tournament.

While keeping your top goalie rested is always a tough task, Campbell is able to handle the workload and in my opinion if he was healthy he should have suited up against the Fins.

Despite the questioning of Blais' decision to start Gibson the game was not decided by the goaltending. Gibson played a solid game despite the score.

The USA were able to control most of the 2nd period after the Fins took the lead. They had many scoring chances and were unable to finish the deal until early in the third period when Brandon Saad was able to hit the back of the net to tie up the game.

However, the game turned with a pivotal goal by Sabres prospect Joel Armia midway through the third. This proved to be the game winning goal for Team Finland.

The star of the game was Armia who scored two for Finland. Armia was drafted in the first round in the 2011 draft by the Sabres and looks to make an impact in the NHL in the coming years.
While the loss hurts the Americans' chances of advancing to the knock out rounds the United States are still in a position to advance or even win the group.

They have games left versus the Czech Republic (Friday at 3:30pm, NHL Net) and versus rival and tournament favorite Canada (Saturday at 8:00pm, NHL Net).

If the Americans are able to win both of those games in regulation the United States will most likely earn a bye into the semi-finals.

If they beat the Czechs they will only need to reach OT versus Canada to assure themselves a spot in the playoff rounds.

Daemen Pulls Stunner over #4 Davenport

The Daemen Wildcats picked up a huge home win Saturday night and their first against a top 5 team since 2008, when they beat then second ranked Walsh.

Davenport (MI) held a 34-26 lead at half while shooting 52% from the floor. The game started off with Davenport racing out to a quick 9-0 lead which lead to a Daemen timeout. The Wildcats were able to creep back into the game and eventually answered with their own run to take a 15-14 lead.

After the Panthers were able to up their lead to 11 early in the second, Daemen used a 10-0 run to creep to within one. With just under ten minutes to go, sophomore guard Mark Coppola tipped in a missed shot to give Daemen it's first lead since 17-16 in the first half. Davenport would be able to score the next six points to regain the edge at 55-51.

The two teams went back and forth for the next posessions until Daemen was able to grab the edge with under a minute to go. They increased their lead to as many as four when senior Dom Mazzochi went 1-2 at the line. Davenport quickly answered with a deep three from JaVonte Ford who was sensational in this game scoring 23 points on 8-10 shooting (4-5 from three) and grabbing 9 rebounds. That would be the last points Davenport would score though as their final two heaves in the final ten seconds were off the mark.

"You got to give all the credit in the world to our players" said Daemen head coach Don Silveri. "We did a good job om emphasizing the importance of getting loose balls and taking charges and our players bought into what we were selling as a staff. Us just being mentally and physically though made a big difference in the game tonight."

Sophomore Casey Sheehan lead the team in scoring as he put in 17 points and added 5 rebounds and 6 assists. He used his quickness in the lane to create for himself and his teammates.

Daemen moves to 6-5 on the year and end their two game losing streak. Daemen will play next Wednesday when they host Fisher College to open up conference play.

St. Francis' Jerry Smith; More than a Football Coach

They say that continuity within a sports program is the key to building a winner and that statement is very true of the Saint Francis High School football program.

Head coach Jerry Smith has been at Saint Francis for over thirty years and during that time has brought much success to the small private boys school located along Lake Erie. Many games have been won, many players have excelled, and many championships have been captured, but that isn't the reason that Smith continues to bring the same passion to work he did thirty years ago.

Jerry Smith is all about the love of the game. Smith, a very humble man, is the first to give credit to his family, players, and coaching staff for any success that him and/or the team has. Smith, while trying to win football games and prep his players for on field success, also strives for achievements off the football field. Throughout his tenure at St. Francis, he has coached tremendous players such as Zack Kedron, Doug Worthington, Ilio DiPalo, and just recently, Akeel Lynch.

During the 2011 season, the Red Raiders finished with an 8-3 record and another Monsignor Martin Athletic Association Championship. The cornerstone and driving force behind this team was star running back Akeel Lynch. Lynch racked up over 2,220 yards and 30 touchdowns. He averaged over 210 yards per game. Lynch did that while missing some time with lingering injuries which makes the accomplishments all that much more impressive. When asked about Lynch's impact on the team, Coach Smith made sure to address his off the field qualities first saying that "he is one of the hardest workers. He is very polite and humble."

Smith then went on to say that on the football field he provides an incredibly powerful force for the team to use. "Opponents always had nine guys in the box. Akeel always had to make someone miss."

The Monsignor Martin League was highlighted by the two stars of the division, Lynch, and St. Joesph quarterback Chad Kelly. Lynch has verbally committed to play at Boston College while Kelly has committed to Clemson. I asked Smith what he thought of both players and how he thought their games would translate at the next level. "All signs point to both of them having outstanding careers." Smith went on to add about Lynch; "I can speak for Akeel as I coached him directly, if he keeps building a champion from the inside out, believe, think, love and work in all aspects of his life, he will have a great career even if he never plays another down of football."

Smith also said that he's one of the best players he's ever coached... that's not a bad compliment I guess either.

Those are strong and powerful words from a man as respected as Smith. I think that this shows the character that not only Smith has, but what he instills on his football teams. In high school, you're consistently gaining and losing players but keeping a team together with a common goal in mind is something that is evident throughout the Red Raiders program. Smith says it is a "privilege" to coach the kids on his football teams.

If you don't know Jerry Smith, I can tell you that his passion goes way beyond football. I had the privilege of knowing him throughout high school during my time at St. Francis. He told me that for the past 30 years he doesn't refer to his job as "going to work" rather he says its "going to school."

Smith points to his family and coaches for his tremendous success over the years. He has a very close relationship with assistant head coach John Scibetta who has been with him for those thirty plus years at St. Francis. He has never been shy to back down from a challenge. Not only off the field but on it as well. Every year, Smith schedules out of state teams who are highly ranked or are very close to it. Smith says that it may be tough to match-up with schools who have thousands of boys to choose from but they can compete, and have done so quite well over the years.

Family is of the most importance to Smith. He says that his wife Cheryl has been supportive of him throughout the time they have been together. "I must say, Cheryl has been a partner like no other. Coaches wives know they are truly special to enable us to do our fun job... That has given me the confidence to know she has my back and allows me the freedom to do what I do for my kids."

Yes, winning football games is important and building programs is great, but leaving last impacts in young boys' lives and making a difference to those you teach, is the real point of Jerry Smith being at Saint Francis. "I am doing what God has intended me to do at the place he wants me at," said Smith. "What better life is there to live while doing what makes you truly happy."

Well said Coach.

Stanfield late jumper lets Daemen escape with win

AMHERST, NY - It was a night to remember for Daemen junior Samantha Stanfield (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison HS) who delivered a game-winning jump shot with 1.2 seconds remaining to lift the Daemen Wildcats to a thrilling 57-56 win in the season opener vs. the visiting York Lions. After Stanfield's jumper rang true, a desperation three-point attempt by York's Brittany Szockyj fell short sending a raucous Daemen crowd into a frenzy.

Stanfield's game-winner highlighted a 34-point second half effort from Daemen who trailed 24-23 at the half. After connecting on just 10-of-30 (33%) field goal attempts in the opening period, Daemen managed a better showing in the second, as they shot 42% (15-for-36).

"Our inexperience definitley showed today, but fortunately we were able to make big plays down the stretch," said Daemen head coach Dave Skolen.

Ellie Allen (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home HS) led Daemen with 19 points and nine rebounds. Junior transfer Chelsea Andorka (Canton, OH/Central Catholic HS), playing in her first game for Daemen, notched 11 points and seven boards while Stanfield added 10 points, eight of which came in the pivotal second half.

Senior center Courtney Donovan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island HS) loomed large for Daemen with eight rebounds and shower terrific passing out of the post resulting in a team-best seven assists.

Samantha Ernest led York with 16 points while Szockyj added 15. Kayla Pangos reached double figures with 10 points off the bench.

Daemen got great minutes off their bench from freshman Jordyn Broas who scored nine points and collected seven boards in her first collegiate game. Broas was part of a huge Daemen rebounding edge as they out-boarded the Lions 53-31 on the night.

With a terrific finish to tonight's contest, the two teams will tip it up again tomorrow afternoon at 2pm
