The day started off with a birdie at the first and followed that up with birdies on four and five. He then started to falter as he bogeyed number eight and followed up with three on the back with no birdies. Katz said after his roind on twitter.
"71 today, couldn't hold it together on the back. Had no good looks at birdie. Need to go low tomorrow #usam #hotputter"
There are still players on the course now so his position on the leaderboard could go up or down come tonight. When I asked Katz what were the causes of his struggles on the back he said "the back is a lot harder, I was driving it great all day, difference was I had much shorter birdie putts on the front."
Check back tonight for an updated leaderboard and round one recap.
